People on The Train

There are people on the train with their headphones on. I wonder if the music they listen to reminds them of someone waiting at home. Because the music I listen to reminds me of someone too far to reach.

There are people on the train typing furiously into their phone screen. I wonder if it is to answer how many stations left they are from home. Because words I type to my phone are only unanswered “hello”s.

There are people on the train looking up at the media screen. I wonder if they plan to watch the movies recommended there with their loved ones. Because when I look up I saw your favorite movie you’ve been waiting since last year, and I feel like breaking down.

I am a person on the train, watching the people on the train. Turning off the sad songs. Locking down my phone. Looking away to the blur of streetlights.

And I know they will only remind me of us inside your car, the traffic killing us but we were too busy laughi-

Oh well.

Letter for Her

You will never find the right words among the cliches. You scratched and wrote and sctrached again and again over the word “amazing”. Because yes, she is, but she is much more than that and you do not know how to say it.

You wanted the world to know how her eyes could shine like the stars at one moment, then darken as the storm the next moment. Or the way her smiles could lit up the room and the way she seems to never realize it. You wanted to write “beautiful”, but it sounded too easy to describe such an ethereal being.

You wanted to thank her for always being there. You wanted her to know you would gladly do the same for her. You wanted to tell her that you would cross oceans for her, but you know she would not like how that sounds. She would instead tell you that she could manage things just fine, thank you.

So at the end, you wrote nothing and everything. You sent her a paper full of scratches and eraser marks. A letter of words over other words. You wished she would understand how no word is enough to describe her, and how nothing could ever explain what you feel for her.

And she understands every bit of it.
